Comfort food! I made this on a cold, raw January day and it just hit the spot. It is flexible, too. I didn't have the tarragon or oregano, so I used fresh basil and garlic to infuse the cream. Then I rubbed the toast with another garlic clove. Ladle the soup over the toast and give it a few minutes to soak in and soften up the bread. It is undeniably scrumptious. I will definitely make this again.

Very good, used sprinkled a bit of flour on tomatoes after sautéing then added evaporated skim milk instead of cream.

This was so delicious! I used a raw and very ripe August heirloom instead of canned because my tomato had to be eaten today. It’s a cool and rainy August day today and this was a cozy, easy and satisfying lunch. Perfect! Don’t skip the cinnamon!

Absolutely perfect lazy breakfast when you're doing dishes or just tiding up the kitchen. Added lots of black pepper and halved the recipe for the first try and it turned out perfect.I did add a small dash of Tabasco to the final product after trying it a few times and liked the bite, however that is super objective to your tastes.

My absolutely #1 favorite quick meal after a killer day at work. If even dealing with toast seems like too much effort, I dump in a handful of croutons or crackers. Healthy, low calorie and delicious.

My mom used to make this (without the cinnamon, and with bay leaf) and ALWAYS served it with crushed saltines stirred in. It was a family favorite and I am delighted to have found this recipe -- thanks, NYT Cooking! For those working with pantry staples, she used a large can of canned tomatoes, undrained, and a 15 oz. can of evaporated milk (not sweetened condensed).

This is absolutely delicious and so simple!!! I cut toasted a multigrain baguette with a very light sprinkling of olive oil. Such a delicious meal!

It tastes exactly how you imagine it would taste. If the combination of cream, tomato, thyme, and cinnamon appeals to you, by all means make this recipe. I found it odd and almost inedible.

Incredibly simple, yet so filling and subtle. Would eat this as a whole meal or snack. Will definitely make again!

Add bacon. That’s what my grandmother did. So good.

Splendid. So so good. Don't be like me and reject the cinnamon out right -- I didn't do the cin stick but ultimately did, maybe half a pinch, of ground cinnamon. I was pleasantly surprised. No thyme as I just don't care for it but bay leaf. Served it over rustic crusty bread (NYT Cooking recipe) that was made last night. My word. Perhaps a pinch of brown sugar to round the flavor. Very, very nice.

Changed a few things but the basic idea was kept: Seasoned cream and tomatoes. Herbs, dried oregano and thyme. Used cinnamon stick, so interesting. Sauteed some garlic before adding cream. And I used the juice from the can which made it delightfully soupy. This is a go-to dish now and I look forward to many different iterations.

Wonderfully evocative of lunches with my grandma after working in garden - yum
